9 Weeks Left!!!

August 20, 2007

We are down to the last 9 weeks and there seems to be a lot of gentle reminders that keep reminding us of how close we are to having a baby in our lives. I don't know what makes it more real, feeling the little guy kicking and growing heavier by the day, or seeing all of the Halloween decorations all over the place! (Speaking of Halloween decorations - there was the cutest outfit that I HAD to buy - so I really hope that Marshall doesn't come AFTER Halloween!!!).

Last weekend, Chris was such an AWESOME & AMAZING husband! He bought me an hour long prenatal massage, which means that I was very relaxed and lazy -a real zero - over the entire weekend. Meanwhile, Chris was totally productive and was busy making sure that everything was looking good in the baby's room. Our furniture was delivered last Thursday and everything is really starting to come together! Here are some updated photos!
We were also very excited to find out on Saturday that Marshall's cousin, who is due to be born in late December/early January, is going to be a baby girl! He's going to be so excited to have a cousin so close in age to him, as well as having some older cousins (Katherine, Cody, Sierra and Emelia) to play with.

Marshall's other cousin, Sierra, just celebrated her first birthday on August 4th! Here is the most adorable photo of her enjoying her birthday cake! Here is a photo of my sister Emily and I. I love my Emily!

Week 27 Progress Report

July 28, 2007

We've been pretty busy this July, so we haven't had too much time to update the site. Well actually, I could've updated it last weekend but we had a wedding to go to on the 21st and I spent all day Sunday (22nd) reading Harry Potter. Here is a photo of Marshall and I on my 27th birthday and Marshall's 27th week in my belly.
Here are some photos of us with our friends at Amanda and Todd's Wedding. It was really great getting to see everyone!
Thankfully, there is nothing dreadful to report as we move into the Third Trimester. :-) This week's doctor visit was pretty normal. The baby is measuring normal, I've started gaining a couple of pounds (finally), my Glucose Test came back with a great score (103) and my blood pressure was normal (120 over 80). After our August 22nd prenatal visit, we'll be seeing the doctor every two weeks.

We've made some improvements to Marshall's room. The weekend after the fourth of July, Chris' family came and helped us put up wainscotting in the bedroom. Without Chris' brother's help, it would not have turned out as great as it did. Thanks Dave!
While the guys were working, the rest of us got to relax in the backyard...
While Chris was painting the room I did some painting of my own. Chris' parents gave us the cutest bookcase to put in Marshall's room. Here is a little "before" and "after" picture of it. After a few weeks of hard work, Chris did a really marvelous job of painting. I can't wait to get the furniture and start decorating!!

4th of July Shopping

July 4, 2007

HAPPY FOURTH OF JULY!!!!

For the past few months we've been looking at all of the standard places for baby furniture: Babies R'Us, Sears, JC Penny's, Burlington Coat Factory, Stacy's Furniture. We finally narrowed down our selection and decided that today was the day that we would order the furniture!!! So this morning we drove over to Burlington Coat Factory and decided to place our order for the set that we liked. Little did we know that this whole thing would turn out to be such a fiasco!! Despite finding somebody quickly to take down our order, we went to the cashier to check out and it took her 45 minutes to figure out how to place the order. The lady was so incompetent and rude. I've never been so relieved to leave a store. Then after going to lunch we discovered that instead of ordering a crib and a dresser they ordered two cribs!! On top of that they said that the items wouldn't be in the store until late October. We decided to go back and get our money back and go else-where.

One of Chris' old work buddies said they found some great furniture at a reasonable cost at Stacy's Furniture, so we drove over to their Allen "Oh Baby!" Store. We found a great set that is supposed to last for a very long time. We are both really excited about the furniture. It is going to look great with the nautical theme. My favorite piece is the chair. It rocks and swivels but the fabric is what makes it so great. It feels like a teddy bear because it is so warm and fuzzy. I just love it. Here is a photo of the furniture set (without the chair) from the manufacturer's website (http://www.westwoodbaby.com/cypress_point.html). We picked out the dresser/hutch and crib. The other objective for today was to finish Marshall's baby registry. What is so convenient is the fact that we don't physically have to go to the store to register. (I LOVE THE INTERNET!) This works out well since we've been so busy at work the past few months. Despite the time constraints; I'm nearly finished with our registries at Target (http://www.target.com/gp/browse.html/ref=nav_registries/601-0736601-3536105?ie=UTF8&node=306498011) Pottery Barn (http://www.potterybarnkids.com/index.cfm) and Babies R'Us (http://www.toysrus.com/registry/index.jsp).

Week 23 Sonogram

Well everything is still looking good for the little guy. The point of this visit was to take a look at his size and all of his (and my) organs to make sure that everything was looking good. Everything is as it should be. He checked in at 11.1 inches and weighs 1 pound 3 grams. The doctor said that he is in the 35th percentile for his size so he's coming in about average right now. It's funny because as much as his momma has been eating out, I'm still weighing in about 3 lbs under my pre-pregnancy weight. Other than the pre-existing back problems, the pregnancy has been pretty non-eventful and has given me very little problems. It just continues to justify my previous thinking that we are going to have a very laid back baby. Here are some of the images that we received on this visit. Each week he is gaining more and more fat and soon the 3-D images will start coming in clearer. For now we are starting to see some of both mine and Chris' features.

Operation - Empty Baby Room - Now complete!!

Well the room is starting to come along. Since the last posting the room went from this...

To this...

But that also meant that all of this had to go to the Salvation Army (which is my favorite non-profit organization)...

Chris will be working hard over the next couple of days to finish painting the room and getting it ready to put wainscoting up this weekend.

The Time Has Come...

June 23, 2007

The time has come to stop procrastinanting and to face the music... we have a lot of "junk." Right now Marshall's room is our "junk" room. It is a bit daunting to look at it all. We are wondering what we will do with all this STUFF especially as the next phase of the pregnancy - nesting - starts kicking in. The reality of our "journey" is starting to set in like an anvil to the head (and helped by Marshall's kicking)! No more can we relax and think that we've got all of this time to prepare. With the Third trimester only 2 weeks away, we are starting to realize that now is the time for action!!!! :-)

We've just got to make room for our little baby! Especially after going to Babies R'Us and Target to start registering. It appears that there are a lot of little items that Marshall will need (and eventually want) so his Mommy and Daddy need to really start clearing out his room. To help our situation, we've asked Salvation Army to send us a truck on Tuesday to help us clear out some of our stuff. And maybe I'll post some stuff on eBay.

I've also been looking at some tips on the internet and found this article that offers a few suggestions and strategies. I've pasted it below because I found it so "refreshing" and it really helps put you in the right state of mind. I hope that everyone can take a little something from this.

How to Get Rid of Your Junk Posted 4 days ago by Andrea Dickson in Lifestyle

Ed's post about moving and getting rid of stuff got me thinking about my clutter. Are you barely able to breathe in your cluttered household? Have tons of stuff that you need to get rid of?
A few weeks ago, I took a seminar called "Commanding Your Clutter" at a local community college. Here's what I learned about collecting, hoarding, shopping, and finally, letting go of all that junk.

Most people who hold onto things for the following reasons:

I paid so much for it! Yes, but are you getting your money's worth from it? No? Sell it.

I have sentimental attachment to it. This is my biggest problem. See step 4 below.

Someone else will be angry if I sell it/give it away. Our teacher told us that the best way to do this is to contact people by letter or by phone and let them know that although you love them, and appreciate the thought that went into the gift that they gave you, you simply don't have room for it anymore. You ask if they would like it back, or if they have any input as to what you should do with it. This can be a difficult proposition, but many people appreciate the honesty. The other option is to get rid of it and just tell them that you broke it if they ever ask.

My children will eventually want it. ASK your children if they will eventually want it, and keep asking them. See if they want it now. I have this monstrous set of big, fake plastic grapes glued to a piece of driftwood that I LOVED as a child. They were my grandmother's. I used to think that they were magic. Now, I can't think of anything to do with them, short of launching them into the ocean using a homemade trebuchet.

But this is an heirloom! Sez you. If you think you have something of heirloom quality, get it appraised and store it properly. Many of the things that you consider heirloom quality might not be. This is (again) where taking a picture of the object, labeling it, and storing it in an album would be appropriate.

It'll be worth so much money some day! This might be true. But if you're like the 40 Year Old Virgin, consider paring down. If collectibles are getting in the way of your everyday living, selling some of them off now will save you years of annoyance, which is worth a bit of money. You can invest that money and watch it grow, and it will grow faster than the value of the baseball card/action figure/porcelain doll, without a doubt.

Here are some tactics for getting rid of stuff:
1. Start small, with one closet or one corner of a room. Our teacher told us to use an egg timer and to work in 15 minute intervals, but that doesn't work for me - I'm better off tackling everything at one go. However, if you are looking at a huge project that can take days, our teacher suggested that organizing for 45 minutes (with 15 minutes of cleanup), one day a week was the only way to get it done while maintaining your sanity.

2. Procure three empty boxes, and label them Keep, Undecided, and Toss. Divide your junk into these boxes, and empty them frequently (in the garbage or at Goodwill, or in your Yard Sale pile). I actually use Keep, Donate, and Toss, because I like to make my decisions straight away.

3. Resist the urge to look through the photo albums and year books during the first round. If you think that the info contained therein will be valuable down the road, put them in the Keep box and deal with them at a later date.

4. Deciding what to get rid of is hard, but it must be done. Our teacher told us the story of a man she had helped on a big cleaning project. He was hanging on to things like a plastic bag from a bookstore in Paris that he felt reminded him of his college travels. The bag, he said, had a special place in his memory.

Fine, she said. Let's get a nice frame for it and hang it on the wall. The man looked at her like she was nuts. You don't frame and hang a plastic bag.

No? Well, let's take a picture of it, then frame that picture. Again, the man stared at her like she had lost it. It finally dawned on him that the bag wasn't the source of his memories, but merely a souvenir, and a junky one at that. Toss it, he said.

Our teacher recommended that we use this rule for each item that we hem and haw over:
1. Would you want to frame and display it?
Yes = Keep.
No = See step 2.
2. Would you want to take a picture of it?
Yes = Take picture, get rid of item.
No = Get rid of item.

If you can take a picture of something that you want to remember, but can't use - do so. Put it in an album with a label. But let it go if it's taking up too much space.

But what should I do with it? You don't have too many choices, but there are a few to consider:
- Throw it in the garbage.
- Put it outside with a FREE sign. Better yet, put a $50 sign on it and watch how fast it gets stolen.
- Give it away to a friend or family member.
- Recycle it (computers, TVs)
- Call a junk tower to take it away.
- Sell it online.
- Trade it online (with something like Freecycle).
- Sell it in the newspaper.
- Take it to Goodwill or similar charity.

Me, I've stopped trying to sell stuff. Donation is the key to getting rid of what I don't need. The amount of money I can make for selling my junk on eBay or craigslist rarely makes up for the amount of time that goes into arranging the sale. Yard sales are a great way to make money, and 'tis the season right now. Get Rich Slowly (via The Simple Dollar) has some great tips for a successful yard sale.

You'll probably be surprised how much stress is relieved by parting with your junk. I was really taken aback this morning when I was able to walk from my bedroom to the bathroom without looking like I was doing the Filipino tinikling all the way there. It can be hard to part with things, but in the long run, it's worth letting go. When they say that you can't take it with you, they aren't kidding.

Day Care Shopping

June 13, 2007

Well Marshall and I have had a pretty interesting couple of days shopping for his day care center. We've been told by many people that places fill up fast and they weren't kidding. Most of the places we visited have openings for January/February, but then no other openings until April! So mommy and daddy have to make a decision very quickly!!! There are so many choices, but after visiting each and every location we were really able to narrow the field. Some places were really very disappointing, especially the new facility near our home. The baby area was very very small and there wasn't a lot of room to crawl around. The babies didn't seem very happy there.

Luckily though, Marshall and I found a really amazing and cool place in Frisco called SandCastle Private School. Marshall is really going to love it there. The school has a Montesorri curriculum and its theme possesses an imaginative environment focused on the ocean, beach, and coastal theme, which is really going to match Marshal's nautical themed bedroom.
Most of the places we visited had a lot of baby girls in their classes, but at SandCastle there are going to be a lot of boys in his class to play with. The boys looked like they were having a lot of fun and the teachers are really nice! When he gets to be 2-3, they are going to start teaching him how to use the computer, learn his letters, and have some Spanish and French lessons. They also learn how to play basketball and soccer. Hopefully the spot doesn't fill up before mommy puts the deposit down...
